The Mets have been hot lately, and the story is not a big expensive trade. It’s young players from their own system stepping up and lighting a spark. Fans on Staten Island have been watching rookies energize the whole lineup.
So how does a pro team turn a young player into a difference-maker? The answer is two words you hear a lot but rarely get explained: player development.
Here’s what it really means, and how your kid can train the same way.
Player development, made simple
Pro teams do not guess whether a hitter is improving. They measure it. They track how hard the ball comes off the bat, how it flies, and how often it’s a good, hard hit. Then they set targets and check the numbers again next week.
That’s it. Player development is just careful practice with real feedback, repeated over and over. The numbers show what’s working and what isn’t, so no one has to guess.
Your kid can train with the same numbers
You don’t need to be in the Mets’ farm system to train this way. Our HitTrax cage at Momentum does the measuring for you. It tracks every swing and turns it into simple stats a player and parent can actually read.
A 10-year-old can watch her line-drive rate climb week to week, just like a prospect moving up the system. Seeing the numbers go up is also a great motivator. Kids work harder when progress is right there on the screen.
3 numbers worth knowing
Here are the basics, in plain terms:
- Exit velocity. How fast the ball leaves the bat. Faster usually means a harder, better hit.
- Launch angle. The up-or-down angle of the hit. The right range turns weak grounders and lazy pop-ups into line drives.
- Line-drive rate. How often a player squares the ball up. This is the number that most often points to real hitting.
You don’t have to memorize the perfect numbers for every age. That’s our job. We read the data and turn it into one or two simple things for your player to work on. (Want to go deeper? Here’s what HitTrax data tells you about a hitter.)
