This past Sunday night, two Major League teams played a game in Williamsport, the home of the Little League World Series. It’s called the Little League Classic. Before the game, big league players spent the whole day in the stands with the Little Leaguers. They signed hats, took photos, and traded pins like kids at recess.
One player said it plain: every 12-year-old dreams of going to Williamsport. And watching the pros that night, you could tell they never stopped feeling that way either.
There’s a real lesson in that for parents. The pros still have fun. And fun is a bigger deal for young players than most people think.
Fun is what keeps kids in the game
Here is a simple truth about youth sports. Kids who enjoy playing stick with it. Kids who stick with it get more reps. And kids who get more reps get better. It all starts with fun.
When practice feels like a chore, players drop out. They quit before they ever find out how good they could be. So keeping the game fun is not the opposite of getting better. It is the path to it.
The "Keep Swinging" idea
The Little League Classic featured the Hank Aaron "Keep Swinging" program. It asks kids to promise one thing: keep going, even when it’s hard.
Every hitter goes through slumps. A 12-year-old goes 0-for-4 and feels awful. A big leaguer does the same and hears about it on TV. The difference is not that the pros never slump. It is how they respond. They keep swinging.
That is a skill, and it can be coached. We teach players to shake off a bad at-bat and step in ready for the next one. A short memory at the plate is one of the most valuable tools a young hitter can own.
How we coach it at Momentum
At Momentum Sports Training in Staten Island, our coaches build confidence and fun into every session. We keep the mood positive, the reps sharp, and the feedback clear. Kids who love coming to the cage are the ones who improve the fastest.
