This week, kids from Bayonne, New Jersey are playing in the Little League World Series in Williamsport. That’s the same tournament you see on TV every August. Bayonne sits just 15 minutes from Staten Island, right over the bridge.
Here is the part every Staten Island parent should remember. Two summers ago, one of our own teams was there too.
Staten Island has already made it to Williamsport
In 2024, South Shore Little League from Staten Island earned a trip to the Little League World Series. Our borough played on that same national stage, in front of the same cameras. Williamsport is not a far-off dream that only happens to kids somewhere else. It has already happened right here.
So when you watch Bayonne this week, watch it like a neighbor who has been there. The question is not whether a Staten Island kid can make it. One team just did. The question is who is next.
What gets a team to Williamsport
It is not luck. It comes down to three things you can work on all year:
- Good reps. Not just swinging a lot. Swinging with a plan, and getting real feedback.
- Strong fundamentals. A balanced stance, quick hands, and a short, direct swing beat a big swing every time.
- Confidence. The best hitters stay calm when the lights come on. That calm comes from being prepared.
You can’t teach any of that in one week in July. It is built slowly, in the months when no one is watching.
The off-season is where All-Stars are made
Next summer’s All-Star teams are being shaped right now, in the fall and winter. A player who keeps hitting through the cold months shows up in spring ahead of the pack.
That is what a place like ours is for. Indoor cages mean weather never stops the work. Regular lessons keep a young hitter sharp when the fields are empty. By the time tryouts come around, the reps are already in the bank.
